The Department of Conservation is telling visitors to keep their domestic pets off Taranaki maunga.
Senior ranger Dave Rogers says staff recently spotted someone trying to enter Egmont National Park with their cat in a backpack.
They’ve also stopped dogs, rabbits and even a parrot tagging along for a day trip.
He says domestic pets can be deadly for native wildlife and owners risk fines and even prison terms for taking them into national parks without a permit.
