Māori pandemic response cause for celebration

South Auckland Māori organisations involved in the Covid response have celebrated the work done by staff and volunteers through the pandemic.
John Tamihere from west Auckland’s Waipareira Trust says the efforts of Māori providers across Tāmaki Makaurau showed what can happen when Māori deliver health care to their own communities.
He says their efficiency and effectiveness were highlighted at Friday’s event.
“We put up the numbers. We’ve vaccinated over a million arms. We have helped over 1.1 million families, We have delivered over 600,000 hygiene packs. We’ve delivered more food, kai, wood than any other provider in the whole of the country and we have done it on the smell of an oily rag,” Mr Tamihere says.
He says what Māori providers want now is parity with the rest of the health workforce.
