No unity in Shaw upset
Green MP Elizabeth Kerekere says a vote which has created leadership turmoil in the party was not an organised coup attempt.
Co-leader James Shaw lost his spot when he failed to get 75 percent support at the annual meeting, and he’s now having to stand again.
Dr Kerekere says the move caught her by surprise, and she immediately rejected any suggestion she should try for the spot.
But she says the party needs to listen to the members – including Mr Shaw’s supporters.
“Those people who forced the situation we are in now, it wasn’t one single group that did this. Some people it’s because of climate, some because of other issues including te Tiriti o Waitangi and how the party is upholding our commitment to that, but also it was our young people saying perhaps a younger candidate might be better,” she says.
Dr Kerekere says doesn’t have a vote on who the co-leader should be – and nor do the many outside commentators who have suddenly become experts on who should lead the Greens.
