History will be made on Saturday when a mokopuna of Te Waka Huia founders Bub and Nen Wehi leads the kapa on to the Spark Arena stage for the first time at Tāmaki Herenga Waka, Tāmaki Herenga Tāngata Hakangahau 2022.
The non-competitive festival features the five Tamaki teams which have qualified for Te Matatini 2023, as well as Kura tuarua and pakeke teams.
Tarumai Kerehoma says she was born into the kapa haka life, and it’s a privilege to follow in the footprints of the grandparents’ who raised her.
“For us, it’s always been a way of life and for us it’s always been about whanau, being able to come together,” she says.
Tarumai Kerehoma says Waka Huia’s set will celebrate 50 years of kapa haka.
The 7000 tickets to HAKAngahau sold out in June, but the event will be streamed live by Māori Television.
