Kings call put into action for mokopuna
A Waikato Tainui leader says a new agreement with Oranga Tamariki marks a step up in the tribe’s ability to look at its mokopuna in times of trouble.
Rahui Papa says it builds on the Mokopuna Ora partnership developed several years ago which required the agency to involve the iwi when tamariki of Waikato Tainui descent come to the agency’s attention in its rohe, including south Auckland.
“The latest stats I saw was there were 173 possible uplifts by Oranga Tamariki in the Family Court. Only four were enacted. That’s huge because Tawhiao said ‘we will look after our own mokopuna’ and this is giving effect to that.
The new agreement will give the iwi more resources to support whānau in the prevention stage.
