Whina passes $1 million at box office

Whina has passed the million-dollar mark at the office five weeks after its release.
The film written and directed by Paula Whetu Jones and James Napier Robertson tells the story of Māori Land March leader Dame Whina Cooper.
Film Commission acting CEO Mladen Ivancic says it’s wonderful to see New Zealand audiences returning to cinemas in such large numbers to see a film about one of Aotearoa’s significant historical figures.
Whina had its world premiere at the Sydney Film Festival in May and opened on 109 New Zealand screens ahead of the first Matariki public holiday.
It was on 87 screens across New Zealand this weekend.
