School zones ignore hapū rohe

The Māori Principals Association Te Akatea wants school zoning rules changed to allow Māori children free access to all schools in the rohe of their iwi or hapū.
Chair Bruce Jepson says when his own school at Papamoa was caught up in an enrolment scheme review, he got a blank look from the Education Ministry consultant when he suggested they should first seek the view of mana whenua.
He says the policy would be in keeping with the article two guarantee of the right of hapū to maintain their sovereignty.
“Māori should have the right to go to any school on their traditional lands but the construct we have, the euro-centric construct continues to restrict mana whenua should those boundaries be constantly changing,” Mr Jepson says.
