Taitokerau Wāhine league off to a good start
A women’s and girls’ rugby league tournament in Taitokerau is off to a promising start.
More than 100 spectators turned up in Whangarei at the weekend to see Te Aupōuri Kuaka, Tūhoronuku Mid North and Whangārei Hauāwhiowhio battle it out for first points in the Peters Sisters Competition.
Rugby League Northland board member Kath Wharton says having a short competition across multiple events suits Taitokerau conditions.
“What we’ve been learning through our happy families work is that we need to create the conditions for our whanau to participate and when you’ve got really remote communities that want to play, want to participate, there’s a couple of things – we need to take the games to them and we need to have a competition that’s not too taxing on the whanau as a whole like getting to training, the cost of petrol, all the other things life throws at us,” she says.
The competition moves to Te Kao this weekend and then Te Pū o te Wheke for the final games.
