Tuatara Collective ready for live action
A Māori theatre company is celebrating the return to live theatre.
Tuatara Collective will host a 10-day festival at Auckland’s Basement Theatre starting on August 2.
Kaiwhakahare Jason Te Mete says Hau [te Hī me te Hā] starts with a five-day season of Hine Te Rēhia, a bilingual theatre extravaganza of song, dance, haka and authentic storytelling through monologue and poetry from seven young Māori and Pasifika women.
After a Saturday Garage Party at the theatre, the festival concludes with singer-songwriter Pati’s new show KA’A.
Te Mete says it’s a relief for artists to be back on stage rather than trying to reach audiences through virtual performances.
“I’ve been really quite determined to not revert to delivering live performance online and in other ways because I feel what I want to do and our mahi we really shine in is live and it’s got to be live,” he says.
