Good kiwi kai could ward off diabetes
A kiwi diet to ward off diabetes and other metabolic diseases.
That’s the aim of the $4 million He Rourou Whai Painga project led by the University of Otago with support from the High-Value Nutrition Science Challenge based at the University of Auckland’s Liggins Institute.
Endocrinologist Professor Jeremy Krebs from the University of Otago in Wellington says Aotearoa New Zealand grows great quality produce.
The project is an opportunity to show that, when combined in a whole diet, with a focus on plant-based foods, such as vegetables, legumes, fruits, whole grains and cereals, nuts and seeds, olive oil and a moderate intake of seafood, those foods improve health and wellbeing of people at risk of diabetes and heart disease.
The study will recruit 200 participants across four centres including Kokiri Marae in Lower Hutt and then use a whānau-based intervention approach to help individuals and their families try new foods and recipes and move their diets to a more healthy one pattern.
