Download AudioSongwriter Riqi Harawira says a dream about Whina Cooper inspired his latest song.
Whina – Walk of Freedom features on the self-dubbed Creative Native’s upcoming EP Ngā Pūrākau o Aotearoa- Stories of Aotearoa coming out later this year.
He says he shared with his partner Flossie, who at the time was looking after her sick mother in Palmerston North, that he’d dreamed of Dame Whina telling him to “whakanuia tēnei pūrakau”.
“(Flossie) rather surprisingly told me that on that same day she’d met a kuia who was convalescing in Palmerston North Hospital who was on the march with Dame Whina Cooper and described it in detail, crossing the (Auckland Harbour Bridge) and that, so he tohu pai, we really are motivated by tohu in out whanau and we considered that a good sigh,”Harawira says.
Riqi Harawira says before going ahead with the recording he arranged a meeting in Panguru to get the go-ahead from the Cooper whanau.
