Bay of Plenty regional councillor, Toi Kai Rākau Iti, will campaign for re-election to his Kohi constituency seat under the Māori Party ticket.
He says as an independent he has, alongside the two other constituency Māori councillors, been successful in influencing pro-Māori changes at the council.
Joining forces with Te Pāti Māori will help coordinate those efforts with a national movement.
Te Pāti Māori president John Tamihere says the party is delighted to have Iti on board.
He says Māori should seize the opportunity to participate at the second most important governance level in Aotearoa.
