Sallies rattle tin as winter woes crash in
This winter seems even harder than usual for people at the bottom.
That’s the view of the Salvation Army, which is running its winter appeal.
Jono Bell, its director of community ministries, says Māori and Pasifika are the largest cohorts of people who come in to seek support.
“One of the challenges we continue to see is around housing and making sure people are in warm and dry and appropriate housing for their whanau size. There are still challenges at this time of the year around access to healthcare, particularly for Māori. There is a need to link them up to local health services and there are some great providers out there but sometimes there is a bit of a disconnect and that is part of the role the Salvation Army can play,” he says.
Mr Bell says the winter cash appeal gives the Salvation Army the extra flexibility it needs to respond to situations.
