The director of a documentary series about Pasifika families in central Auckland says it shows how home ownership can create generational wealth and opportunity.
Litia Tuiburelevu says Still Here looks at the economic and social struggles of families and also the resilience of those still living in what is now expensive inner-city real estate.
She says the series grew out of research she was doing for a law degree,
“Central Auckland was one of the areas I focused on to explore how policies around urban development and racism were done, like landlords and real estate agents, how that affected families in the inner city. I always wanted to work in film and TV so I was like ‘I think there are some really rich and amazing stories here that would be so much better being told on screen than just sitting in a law school assignment,” Tuiburelevu says.
