Smoked fish and horopito bring flavour to Matariki table
Maketū super chefs Karena and Kasey Bird want to help all New Zealanders put a bit of Māori on their Matariki table.
They’ve teamed up with Silver Fern Farms to create a Matariki menu.
Karena says it includes favourites like venison, kūmara and horopito, and it also celebrates midwinter comfort food.
“With the recipes we’ve created for Matariki we’ve just incorporated simple things like adding beautiful smoked kahawai through mashed potato to give it almost smoked fish pie flavour that we’ve grown up with or trying to introduce things like puha which often grows in you back yard but people don’t know what it looks like,” Karena Smith-Bird says.
The pair are working on their third cookbook, which will be in te reo Māori.
