Rehua opens marae for Matariki whanau
Celebrating Matariki is nothing new to Christchurch’s Rehua Marae.
It’s holding its annual Whānau Day this Saturday, and it’s encouraging locals to pop in for live entertainment including kapa haka, craft, clothing and kai stalls and toi Māori workshops.
Trustee Paula Rigby says it’s been going for about a decade now, and she’s glad to see the rest of Aotearoa catch up.
“I think it’s a way to break down some of those barriers people have. It’s a way as a nation we can celebrate our special place in the word and our uniqueness to the rest of the world as well,” she says.
