Peace of mind in native forest plan
Ngāti Hine Forestry Trust wants its new ngahere to bring peace of mind.
The trust has partnered with forest researchers Scion and the New Zealand Forest Service to start replace its forests from pine to native rakau.
Trustee Ernest Morton says it’s combining matauranga Māori practices with science in an attempt to mend the damage done to its rohe, implementing te kuira or mosiac approach.
“This mosaic approach or kuira approach it’s a demonstration of clawing back some of those things that are going to be complementary for all of us. If you walk into a native forest, the energy the trees give off brings peace of mind. Those sorts of things are going to comeback again,” he says.
