Med student cap holds back Māori increase
Auckland University’s medical school is ready to address the doctor shortage – if it’s allowed.
Deputy dean Warwick Bagg says it’s keen to increase the number of medical students numbers, but that number is regulated by the government, which picks up most of the $62,000 a year training cost.
“At the present time that number is 257 (students) so any increase in that number would be dictated by the Government and we would be very willing to increase our numbers if there was an agreement of the Government to do that,” he says.
Professor Bagg says the faculty has a mission to increase the number of Māori and Pasifika health professionals, including doctors, and last year’s intake included 77 Māori and Pacific students.
