Gangs looking for respite from shootings

An expert on New Zealand gangs says gang members want a way out of conflict as much as those in those in the community who are calling for gang violence to stop.
Sociologist Jarrod Gilbert hopes the truce reached this week in the conflict between the Killer Beez and Tribesmen holds.
These incidents, the intense gang wars that flare up from time to time in different communities, they’re scary for the public but they’re no picnic for those involved either and it gets to a point where everyone is looking for a way out, a way to calm down, and it took the police attention to assist with that,” he says.
Dr Gilbert says it’s just luck that innocent bystanders haven’t been injured or killed in the conflict.
