Gang truce best approach for community
A South Auckland Pacific Islander leader Alf Filapaina has congratulated those who brokered a reported truce between warring gangs.
Auckland councillor and former police officer Alf Filapaina says the lack of incidents been the Killer Beez and Tribesmen over the past 48 hours shows a truce appears to be holding.
He says the calls by Opposition parties for tough on gangs measures like banning gang patches in public won’t work.
“We’ve heard that before. I don’t think that will work and I’ve been there when they’ve tried to implement that around New Zealand before. We just need to keep that dialogue open with the gangs because they are going to be a part of our communities,” Mr Filapaina says.
The former community liaison officer says banning patches would only cause unwanted conflict between police and gangs.
