Māori achievers honoured for Matariki
Rob Ruha has to find room in his waka huia for yet another trophy, the supreme award at this year’s Ngā Tohu o Matariki.
Ruha also picked up the Tipuārangi award in recognition of his contributions to waiata reo Māori and work with rangatahi.
Lifetime achievement awards were presented to Emeritus Professor Dr Whatarangi Winiata and Tā Hirini Moko Mead for their enormous contributions to te reo me ngā tikanga Māori.
Whakaata Māori chief executive Shane Taurima says it’s an honour and a privilege for the service to showcase the extraordinary achievements and contributions of such inspirational people.
Dame Lisa Carrington won the sports category, Hēmi Kelly te reo and tikanga, Marcus Akuhata-Brown the education tohu, Dr Chris Tooley health and science, Kale Panoho business and innovation, and Tina Ngata & Mana-aki Matakāoa the community award.
Young achievers awards went to Atareta Milne and Te Haakura Ihimaera Manley.
