Kouka joins creative surge with rags to riches tale
Award-winning playwright Hone Kouka is telling a rags to riches story with his new play.
Ngā Rorirori, his first new production in four years, follows a money-grubbing brother and his community-minded sister sister who suddenly inherit a large pūtea after a lifetime of poverty.
He says the contrast between greed and aroha is a way to look at the effects of capitalism on Māori.
He says alongside yesterday’s premiere of the new Whina Cooper biopic and musician Rob Ruha taking out the supreme tohu at this year’s Matariki awards, it’s time to again celebrate Māori creativity.
Ngā Rorirori starts at Wellington’s Circa Theatre on Saturday.
