Change of tone expected from Speaker Rurawhe

Te Pāti Māori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa Packer is looking forward to Adrian Rurawhe becoming Parliament’s Speaker.
The Government will nominate Mr Rurawhe for the role when Trevor Mallard retires in August.
Ms Ngarewa-Packer says Mr Rurawhe has been Mr Mallard’s understudy for some time, and he will bring his dignity and mana to the role.
She hopes he will usher in the changes Te Pāti Māori has called for and that it means a better deal for Māori MPs.
“Adrian’s also was intimately aware of what kaikiritanga, what racism can be like so there is an expectation I think he will be able to match in that space that perhaps if you’re not Māori you can’t,” Ms Ngarewa Packer says.
