Wairau show signs of the times

Signs, symbols and visual languages are the theme of the next show at the Wairau Māori Art Gallery in Whangarei’s Hundertwasser Centre.
Tohu Whakatipu is curated by Dowse Museum director Karl Chitham and features works by Lonnie Hutchinson, Kaaterina Kerekere and Rangi Kipa.
Gallery director Larissa McMillan says symbols offer access points to understanding.
“For Maori tohu is not only a sign but a set of directions or a wayfinding that allows us to navigate contemporary life. Tohu Whakatipu will explore unique symbols and visual languages and it will be a really powerful show,” she says.
Tohu Whakatipu opens on June 24
