Architecture firm gives Māori scholar boost
The winner of this year’s Jasmax Architecture Scholarship for Māori and Pacific students says she wants her career as an architect to reflect her cultural presence and her people.
Te Hekenga Hiwa Piahana, who attended Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngā Maungarongo in Owairaka/ Mt Albert, is a first year architecture student at Waipapa Taumata Rau University of Auckland.
The scholarship is worth $5000 a year for up to five years.
Jasmax, CEO, Sjoerd Post, says te Tiriti o Waitangi offers a powerful opportunity to create architecture and design that is unique to Aotearoa, and supporting students through their architecture degree and into practice is an important way Jasmax can contribute to greater numbers of indigenous practitioners entering the industry.
