Wise kōrero to set Matariki scene

Master navigator Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr wants all New Zealanders to take part in this year’s Matariki celebrations.
His Te Toki Voyaging Trust is holding a number of activities this week, including sailing at Whaingaroa-Raglan for local kura, and a panel discussion on maramataka at the Kāwhia Town Hall on Saturday.
He says it’s an opportunity to start the Māori new year, and the new public holiday in the right way.
“It’s not just Māori people who want to remember their friends so I invite all people in the community in Aoteaeoa to take this time to think about those special people in their lives who have passed on and to think and wish for the good things they want in their lives for the year to come,” Mr Barclay-Kerr says.
Saturday’s panel discussion at Kāwhia featuring Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr, Wayne Ngata and Rereata Makiha along with host Julian Wilcox will be live streamed from 5pm on the Te Toki Voyaging Trust page.
