Whakaata Māori dawns

Māori Television is no more.
Its new official name, Whakaata Māori, was unveiled at a dawn ceremony this morning led by Tainui and Ngāti Whātua kaumatua.
Chief executive Shane Taurima says new signage and stationery will be phased in over the next few month.
He says after 18 years it’s time to move to a Māori name which better reflects the new media environment where broadcast television is just one of its platforms.
The word whakaata, which literally means to exhibit, to display or to mirror, reflects our job here at Whakaata Maori which is to showcase and promote everything about te ao Māori, te reo Māori, tikanga Māori, ahurea Māori so just so pleased we have been able to do that today and we will finally be known as Whakaata Maori,” Mr Taurima says.
