Wānanga to share moko matauranga
The organiser of this weekend’s Moko Ora Wānanga says it’s an opportunity to collect and share knowledge.
Rotorua-based ringa tāmoko Hōhua Mohi says many up and coming artists need to learn the whats and whys of the form.
He says the resurgence of moko means may new artists are adapting patterns without knowing their story.
“Every time we do a moko it’s like there’s this big well spring of of matauranga and all you’re doing is putting your hand in and taking a cup or a handful to better make your moko but hopefully this wananga can help people dig that cup deeper down in the pool and drag it up,” he says.
The wānanga will be held at Tāheke Marae in Rotorua.
