Māui story gets hip hop treatment
Dance theatre group Fresh Movements is reprising its show MĀUI for a Matariki performance.
The production, which fuses Pacific, Māori, hip-hop and contemporary dance with music, poetry and stunning graphics had a short run in Mangere in 2019.
Choreographer Hadleigh Pouesi says the story of Māui is well known throughout the Pacific.
He says the production involves up to 40 dancers, spoken word artists, singers, animators and musicians.
“We think of ourselves as a hip hop dance crew. We’re the first hip hop dance crew to take that stage so we’re really excited to take over the stage at the Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre,” he says.
MĀUI is on June 23 at the Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre.
