Call out for more GPs
The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners is encouraging aspiring medical professionals to join their ranks.
The ‘Specialise as a GP’ campaign features five short videos of GPs sharing their mahi, including Dr Jason Tuhoe and Turuki Healthcare’s Dr Lily Fraser.
Dr Tuhoe says growing up in Coromandel he saw how the health system did not work for Māori, and that working as a Māori in general practice was a way to change that.
“It’s a rewarding career and it allows you to do so many different things in terms of not only working within your community and contributing to the health and well-being of your community but also looking and putting that gaze across the system itself in ways we can make a difference to our people so that they can thrive to be who they need to be in a health sense,” he says.
Dr Tuhoe says GP numbers are expected to halve over the next decade as older doctors retire.
