Residents of Kaikohe are looking back into a tradition for solutions to gang violence spilling out of Auckland into the north.

Kaumauta last week declared a rāhui on violence after an incident involving members of the Tribesmen and the Killer Beez.

Mana Tahere from Ngapuhi Social Services says local kura are doing gun drills – just in case.

He says there has been a longstanding gang presence in Kaikohe, but one shooting is one too many.

“The sanctity of whether it was homes or schools or marae is just not there anymore and unfortunately there are a whole lot of reasons why. Hence why this tradition of taking on a rāhui. It’s a different type of gang fight or different type of generation as well so very sad,” Mr Tahere says

Ngāpuhi is encouraging conversations at the whānau and hapū level to get people to address violence.
