Police arm up as gang bullets fly

Deputy Police Commissioner Wally Haumaha says police need to arm themselves when tackling fighting between the Killer Bees and Tribesmen gangs.
He says police are doing their best to discover the source of the feud and to protect the public.
“People talk about arming themselves – well in order to keep our community safe we have to keep our police safe and if arming them keeps them from being injured in the crossfire of these gangs coming out and blatantly carrying out their tactics, that’s the issue here in Tāmaki,” Mr Haumaha says.
He has also been talking to community leaders in Kaikohe who have called a rāhui to try to stop more gang violence spilling into the north.
