Māori help with Pacific housing need

The Minister for Pacific Peoples has told a post-budget talanoa in South Auckland that Pasifika communities will benefit from a $196 package after years of being left behind.
Mangere MP Aupito Willian Sio says highlights include the $49m for a partnership with Ngāti Toa to build 300 homes for Pacific people in Porirua East over the next 10 years – and he’d like to see the model used in Tāmaki Makaurau and Waikato.
“Just because of our connections a rising generation of Pacific with whakapapa to Māori, but more importantly in recognition of our tuakana-teina relationship and the need for us to be lifting each other because we have shared aspirations and shared challenges,” he says.
The Pacific package also includes almost $50 million to support Pacific models of care in the new health system, $20m for diabetes prevention and treatment in South Auckland, $15.5m to support shovel-ready Pacific businesses and $13.7m for the Dawn Raids historical package.
