No flash car needed for mayor Collins
Auckland mayoral candidate Efeso Collins says people will need to stop seeing their cars as status symbols if the city’s public transport and climate change aspirations are to be met.
Mr Collins says it’s a problem he often sees in Pacific communities.
“I catch the bus and train as much as I can and I’m often told by people at church ‘why aren’t you in a car? Why aren’t you being driven around because you’ve got an important role?’ I think it’s dealing with some of those cultural aspirations we have or cultural understandings where we thought owning a car and a flash car at that, means we have been successful in New Zealand,” he says.
He also wants to see more off-road cycling lanes out south because riding on the road isn’t seen as safe.
