$40 million for Māori media
Māori media gets an injection of $40 million from this year’s Budget.
Broadcast funding agency Te Māngai Pāho will receive a total of $32 million ($16 million in each of the next two years) and Whakaata Māori (Māori Television) will receive an extra $4 million dollars for each of the next two years.
Minister Willie Jackson says details around the pūtea will be announced next week, but it is expected that it will assist with much needed content supply for both Iwi/Māori Radio and Television.
It’s also expected that the merger between TVNZ and Radio New Zealand will see an end to the charging of resources by TVNZ to Māori Television and production houses.
TVNZ charges Māori Television platform fees, while production houses are charged a retrieval fee for content.
