Kauri pest cull fills freezers

Local responses are being encouraged in a new approach to kauri dieback.
Tiakina Te Kauri, the Kauri Protection Agency within the Ministry for Primary Industries, is holding an online Tai Tokerau hui ā hapū today to introduce the kaupapa, discuss project opportunities and funding and share case studies.
Governance board co-chair Huhana Lyndon says $32 million has been earmarked over the next five years for local government, community and hapu projects.
Projects funded already include mapping healthy and unhealthy kauri in the ngahere, developing education resources, and pest control.
“Goats and pigs are one of the hazards, the pests that kawe that mate through the ngāhere, so Northland Regional Council working alongside landowners in the Whangaruru-Te Rāwhiti area did a big cull recently and put some meat in the freezers,” Ms Lyndon says.
