On your bike as costs creep up
Research by Auckland Transport has found the number of Māori cyclists has doubled in Auckland in the past two years.
Auckland councillor Angela Dalton says she asked the agency for advice on what could be done to encourage more Māori onto bikes.
She says told it’s already happening, with the number of regular cyclists rising from 7 per cent in 2020 to 14 per cent, and 37 per cent saying they occasionally cycle.
For many, it’s becoming an economic necessity.
“For our low income families, 30 per cent of their expenses go on running and maintaining a car, It’s unaffordable, so the less trips that can be made in a car, if possible, the better for those families,” she says.
Angela Dalton says bikes aren’t the solution for everyone, especially large families, but the council needs to make sure there is a choice between cars, cycles and public transport.
