Moko shows face of diversity
A Māori sculptor and tā moko artist says he was surprised at the diversity unveiled in a Māori Television’s new Moko series.
Rangi Kipa is interviewed on the show along with other artists, academics and wearers discussing such as the tikanga of tā moko, who owns the designs and the impact of colonisation.
He says it’s a timely reminder, that not all moko are created the same, and the modern practice is evolving.
“What I was most surprised with was the diversity amongst the people interviewed which I think is a healthy thing. I think it’s probably a feature of what it takes to try to restore our cultural practices,” Kipa says.
New episodes of MOKO will be released every Monday on Māori Television.
