Housing subsidy lags rent rise

The Salvation Army is calling on the Government to boost housing support payments for hundreds of thousands of lower-income households.
Senior policy analyst Paul Barber says over the past six years rents have gone up on average 40 per cent.
But there’s been no change to the accommodation supplement, which is paid to more than 300,000 households.
“It’s about trying to address the current needs while we look at all those big challenges around housing that are going to take time to sort out,” Mr Barber says.
Longer term some way needs to be found to move away from the accommodation supplement towards some path to homeownership.
