Help for Māori farms to go green


Associate Agriculture Minister Meka Whaitiri says Māori primary sector businesses will benefit from spending in this week’s Budget to lower agricultural emissions, expand carbon forests, and produce alternative green’ fuels.
The Government is putting another $710 million into the Climate Emergency Response Fund for a range of initiatives,
Ms Whaitiri says Māori agribusiness has a big role to play by blending traditional knowledge to protect the land and environment and help drive productivity.
It’s about determining the most appropriate uses for whenua, adopting new technology to reduce emissions, and providing on the ground support to make the changes.”
Budget 2022 initiatives included just over $6 million to support the implementation of a pricing system for agricultural emissions and $35.4 million to support farmers, growers and whenua Māori entities to transition,,
This complements existing initiatives such as work breeding low emissions sheep, nitrate inhibitors and methane inhibitors for ruminants.
