Station branch give unique Tāmaki experience
Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says the naming and branding of stations on the new City Rail Link will tell people they’re nowhere else than Tāmaki Makaurau.
The station at Mt Eden will be Maungawhau, Karangahape Rd is Karanga ā Hape, Te Wai Horotiu is accessed through Aotea Square and Britomart becomes Waitemātā.
Mr Goff says the names devised by Auckland Transport and City Rail in consultation with mana whenua will add to the experience when the system opens in 2024.
“When you look at that Te Wai Horotiu which is on Aotea Square,, that is ultimately going to be handling over 54,000 passengers an hour and we will have locals obviously, commuters going through, but we will also have visitors to the city and the visitors will know they are in Tamaki Makaurau, they are not in any other part of the world,” he says.
The names will go before the New Zealand Geographic Board for approval at the end of May.
