Whakarewarewa mountain bike trail open for tourists
After a $7 million upgrade, the Whakarewarewa Forest Loop mountain bike trail will be added to the Ngā Haerenga Great Rides network.
Tourism Minister Stuart Nash says not only is the 33-kilometre trail through the CNI Iwi Holdings-owned forest a high-quality physical ride, it offers a taste of Māori culture, geothermal features and iconic redwoods, with spectacular views over several lakes.
He says the upgrade was a great example of effective collaboration between central and local government, the local community and iwi.
As part of the development funded by Kānoa, the Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit, an iwi-centred brand, Moerangi, was developed for the forest.
It reflects the natural landscape of the rohe – particularly the two maunga, Ngongotahā and Moerangi, as well as the overall Whakarewarewa Forest Loop branding.
