Hapū steps up for Tūrangi board

Taupō District Council has approved a mana whakahono partnership with Ngāti Tūrangitukua, the Tūwharetoa hapū with mana whenua over Tūrangi and the surrounding area.
The partnership covers Resource Management Act, Local Government Act and Reserve Act matters and will be implemented by a co-governance committee equally made up of Ngāti Tūrangitukua and council appointees.
A mana whakahono ā rohe is provided for in the RMA, allowing tangata whenua and local authorities to discuss and record how they will work together on resource management matters, including joint decision making.
Much of the Tūrangi township’s community amenities and water infrastructure is on reserves owned by Ngāti Tūrangitukua, but which were previously administered solely by the council.
