The Department of Conservation is to invest $3 million in the Tupuna Maunga Authority’s plan to replant native vegetation and eradicate pests from Auckland’s volcanic cones.
Authority chair Paul Majurey says the tupuna maunga can be the symbolic epicentre of pest eradication in the heart of the city.
The Jobs for Nature funding will create up to 39 full-time roles across 14 maunga for three years.
Mr Majurey says the aim of the revegetation is to create an ecological corridor for native flora and fauna which have disappeared from the urban environment.
