Co-governance for ACT but not Māori
Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson says he’s looking forward to countering ACT leader David Seymour in television appearances this weekend.
Mr Jackson has released details on the steps in developing a plan to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in New Zealand.
Mr Seymour claims the declaration, signed up in 2010 by a Government that included ACT, promotes division over democracy.
Mr Jackson says he’s talking gobbledygook.
“We want it on school boards. We want it in our health areas. We want it in our social areas. Co-governance and co-management can take on any type of entity. It all depends on context. It doesn’t just talk about to the mountains and the birds and the skies and the seas. It’s about Māori participating in society. It doesn’t have to be 50-50. It’s all about context. It can take on different models, and different entities. Why is that so scary for the Seymours of this world,” he says.
Willie Jackson says the adoption of MMP in 1996 marked an evolution of democracy in Aotearoa and enables parties like entering co-governance relationships with large parties.
