Pacific MPs unite against seabed mining

The Greens’ associate oceans and fisheries spokesperson, Teanau Tuiono, says a new Pacific Parliamentarians’ Alliance on Deep Sea Mining is whanaungatanga in action.
The alliance was launched at the 7th Our Oceans Conference in Palau last week.
Mr Tuiono says here’s a long history of extractive industries coming into the Pacific with stories about how they will help the economy.
But once they’ve taken the phosphate or nickel or fish they leave and someone else has to clean up.
“We’re in the context of a climate crisis and a biodiversity crisis. It does not make any sense to allow corporations to come down and disrupt the seabed,” he says.
Teanau Tuiono says the work done by Ngāti Ruanui and Ngā Rauru to stop seabed mining off South Taranaki has shown how communities can push back against the corporations.
