The Māori Party wants a 50th birthday present for Te Matatini.
Its toi Māori policy calls for kapa haka to be funded at the same audience participation rate as the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
Co-leader Rawiri Waititi says that means $19 million a year for Te Matatini, and the Māori Party would add a further $10 million for community, hapū and iwi development of kapa haka and its accompanying art forms.
Te Matatini currently gets $1.9 million a year, compared with $16.3 million for the orchestra and $5.4 million a year for the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
