Kura Kaupapa Claim headed for mediation

Kura kaupapa claimants have agreed to enter mediation with the crown.
The mediation option was raised by the Waitangi Tribunal which is dealing with a request for an urgent hearing.
In a statement, Te Rūnanga Nui o Ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori chair Cathy Dewes says agreeing to mediation was “an expression of good faith towards the Crown”.
She says mediation may bring about a remedy more swiftly than an urgent Waitangi Tribunal process.
Dr Dewes says the Education Ministry has failed to back Te Aho Matua, the foundation framework for Māori immersion schools.
Kura are seeking an equitable level of funding.
They also want a standalone Māori education authority, which the Crown has ruled out.
