Papakāinga response to call from home

The Associate Minister for Māori Housing, Peeni Henare, and Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson this morning attended the blessing of the first three homes in a 10-home papakāinga at Pukeaute just south of Hastings.
Mr Henare says the Mahue Pera Ahu Whenua Trust’s project brings to life the Government’s Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga programme, delivering both affordable rentals and homeownership options for whānau.
He says iwi and hapū around the country are under pressure to deliver housing as whānau reassess their options after the pandemic.
“Everyone wants to come home. People from Tāmaki Makaurau and Whanganui ā Tara are looking at coming home, and the likes of Ngāti Kahungunu and others are acutely aware of that need, and we are working closely with them to deliver not just papakāinga housing but a whole host of different housing opportunities,” he says.
The Government invested $3.9 million into the feasibility, infrastructure, and development of the Pukeaute papakāinga.
