New literacy and numeracy strategy gives teachers focus

Associate Education Minister Kelvin Davis says new literacy and maths strategies should give teachers the tools to get results.
The Literacy, Communication and Maths Strategy and Hei Raukura Mō Te Mokopuna will be phased in over the next five years.
They include more training and support for teachers and changes to assessment.
Mr Davis says his experience as principal of Kaitaia Intermediate showed him what could be done with the right focus.
“I noticed when I was still teaching that a lot of schools focused on community and social aspects. I used to say we can’t really impact entirely on what’s going on outside the fence but we can impact on what’s going on inside the fence. If we focus on the things we can change we will get results, and we started to see it, but you have to be pretty hard headed and focus on the things that matter and you will get the results,’ he says.
